Adverse Childhood Experiences

The Child Welfare Information Gateway defines ACEs as traumatic events that occur before a child reaches the age of 18. ACEs include all types of abuse and neglect, such as parental substance use, incarceration, and domestic violence. ACEs can also include situations that may cause trauma for a child, such as having a parent with a mental illness or being part of a family going through a divorce.

Empowering women with the knowledge and resilience to overcome the challenges posed by ACEs, we have curated a trove of resources, from books and workshops to videos.

Biology of Toxic Stress

Frequent flooding of stress hormones like Adrenaline, Cortisol, Norepinephrine is toxic to the body. In children the stress event might be forgotten, but the internal "corrosion" caused by the hormones is remembered by the brain and body.

How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across a Lifetime

Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain.

Resilience

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary Resilience reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death.

The ACEs Primer

The ACES Primer provides foundational knowledge for understanding and using ACES. It outlines the history of ACES, including why it was developed, as well as its current and future value in production and postproduction workflows.
